One of the most rewarding things you can do whilst travelling is volunteering in whatever way you feel comfortable with. For me, it was spending the day at an Elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, Thailand. If you are touring Thailand not only do I recommend that you visit this beautiful Thai town, but you must visit the Elephant Nature Park.

This park was founded by Lek Chailert, a remarkable woman who has had a love of Elephants since childhood when her Grandfather (a tribal healer) was given a baby elephant from a man whose life he had saved. Lek quickly learnt though that not all elephants were treated kindly and she witnessed the abuse and neglect (warning, this link shows harm to Elephants, but if you want to see the truth then please watch) these ‘pets’ received. Lek became an animal activist and eventually opened her sanctuary.
